About this project
Partnership project for a safer nightlife in Copenhagen
Cities around the world stand afore complex issues in regards to safety and security in the nightlife.
The challenge for cities today is to create an environment and a culture in which pleasure and social benefits are maximised.
Parallel with other European big cities, the municipality of Copenhagen has taken up this challenge as well, because they believe that it should be both festive and safe for everyone to venture out into Copenhagen's nightlife! That is the vision behind the initiative "Tryg den af" - the partnership project for a safer nightlife in Copenhagen"; a partnership between the City of Copenhagen, Diageo, Nej til knive (Knifes no thanks), and IHRA (International Harm Reduction Association) whih has just been kick started for the second year in a row.
This project is the result of two years of stakeholder engagement and advocacy work in the Danish capital. The purpose of the comprehensive cooperation is to bring together all the key players in the nightlife - restaurants, police, security personnel, organizations, municipalities, transportation companies and others - In a partnership. A partnership which will equip us to solve the common challenges of the nightlife. And implement a series of concrete actions that will make it even more safe and secure to go out and enjoy the nightlife in the city of Copenhagen. The project will comprise several different elements, which are all based on local needs and potential impact, and on international experiences and best practice.
Among the next steps are a volunteer certification scheme complimented by targeted training courses for the night life staff. In order to better enable staff to handle particular drug and alcohol affected customers and conflicts with different customer groups.
Efforts will also focus on making it safer to come home from the city and to establish new agreements between the different public and private actors involved in the nightlife. So that more staff are utiliized in the general harm reduction work and so that dangerous incidents can be prevented and properly managed should they occur.
All activities are developed and implemented in close cooperation between the involved actors.
Informing the public and raising awareness within the younger target groups is also part of "Tryg Den Af" objectives. To implement a significant information effort, among other campaigns, events and a website, which adds to the visibility of the project messages and activities and to showcase the bars and nightclubs and others, who choose to be part of the partnership and who makes a special effort for a safe and festive nightlife in Copenhagen.
The Partnership for a safer nightlife is funded by Diageo, the City of Copenhagen and the International Harm Reduction Association (IHRA) and will run untill the end of 2010.

The Organisation: Nej Til Knive I Nattelivet:
The purpose of going out in the night and how you do it – has changed significantly over the last 5-10 years. More and more people feel insecure at bars and clubs in Copenhagen – and the use of knifes is still increasing. This development has together with bad experiences from episodes in the night been a reason for creating the organisation ’Nej til Knive i Nattelivet’.
